Guesting at The Island 2026

The Island is not just a tattoo studio, it’s a nature-infused home for artists to work on creative and meaningful projects on skin in the historic coastal city of Edinburgh.

Our studio has a new home in 2026! We have restored part of an old customs building near to the water to create a contemporary tattoo and art gallery space. We have some great neighbours, including a delicious coffee shop right next door, and if you take a few steps further you’ll find yourself walking along a tree-lined river as it flows out into the sea.

The Island was one of the first tattoo studios globally to be designed using biophilic principles – design led by our psychology and natural principles, rather than human aesthetics – which creates a more relaxing and comfortable environment for clients and artists.

10:00 - 18:00 (for appointments)

09:00 - 18:30 (access for artists)

(Guests can work longer if needed, just let us know!)


We are a shoe-free studio – please feel free to bring indoor slippers or warm socks.

Studio Info

The studio cut is 30% which you pay either by cash or bank transfer in GBP at the end of your visit. The cut is capped at a maximum of £200/day.

Rates in Edinburgh are usually between £100-200/hr depending on style and experience.

The studio provides all disposables (mostly biodegradable and all vegan), a workbench, and printing/stencil making facilities. You just need your machine, power pack/cables, needles and inks! If you need to order anything directly to the studio we recommend using Killer Ink or Barber DTS.

The Area

The Island is a ground floor, private studio in a restored customs warehouse next to The Waters of Leith, located at The Shore in Leith (a 15 min tram ride from the city centre). Right next to us you’ll find Williams & Johnson (one of the best cafes in Edinburgh) as well as small supermarkets, shops, restaurants and bars. The Shore is the locals’ area in Edinburgh, bustling with independent and creative businesses.
